Sunday Worship on You Tube
For the past 5 years we have been broadcasting our worship services on YouTube. Over the course of these broadcasts we have worked to improve the images and the sound quality. In a separate article you will learn about our plans to improve these broadcasts even further by updating our equipment. If you would like to be included on the email list that we send out each week giving you the direct link to view the worship service, send a message to the church office at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will add your email to the list.
It has been five years since we installed our existing technology in the sanctuary at Hope Lutheran Church. That installation consisted of a new sound board, new speakers, additional channels to allow for more music applications, a sound booth with roll top desk, two projectors and retractable screens, two laptop computers, a Blu Ray player, sound bridge, amplifiers and a video camera. The cost for this project was approximately $35,000.00.
Five years is a long time when one is discussing technology. We had a difficult first year with our system, especially with compatibility issues. Once those issues were resolved our system has worked very well. We are now at a time when our congregation should be considering upgrades to this system.
Jill Anderson, Worship and Music Coordinator and Duane Foss, Chair of the Board of Property have developed a proposal for upgrades. These are based on the needs that we have seen over the past two years. Those needs are:
• Need for more microphone and instrument jacks in the sanctuary
• Need for remote operations of sound like outside or in the fellowship hall
• Need to improve the sound quality of the musical groups for the radio and TV broadcasts.
• Need for multiple cameras and an operation board to improve the quality of the TV broadcasts.
• Need to “remodel” the technology area to enable smooth operation of all equipment.
• Need to move the light panel so that lights may be controlled from the sound/video booth.
• Need to upgrade spotlight to make it more versatile for multiple applications.
The video portion of this proposal would not only make our Youtube broadcasts better but it would also give us the opportunity to offer quality video broadcasts that could be used on local TV stations, or offered to people at weddings, funerals or other special events. Moving from one camera would give us the ability to make recording much closer to the quality one sees on their own television broadcasts. Along with the video, with the suggested sound improvements, our broadcast would be greatly improved. Adding microphones above the choir loft and above the sanctuary would greatly improve the overall sound in the sanctuary as well on “the air”.
We believe that upgrades made five years ago have greatly improved the quality of worship at Hope. We also believe that these proposed changes will further enhance our worship in the Sanctuary and for our members at home and especially those away for extended periods of time.
In working with NLFX, the company out of Bemidji that installed and has maintained our current system, we are excited that our used equipment may be able to be resold through them and that they have found excellent pricing on the systems that we would like to purchase. The estimated costs for these upgrades would be about $25,000, prior to resale of existing systems. Both the Board of Worship and the Board of Property have voiced support for the proposal. We want to make these upgrades a reality in the upcoming months. You will be hearing a temple talk on Sunday, June 10th to learn more. If you would like to make a contribution to support this project, make your gift payable to Hope Lutheran, marked “A/V upgrade”.
